Sweet tribute to Hayao Miyazaki by dono

I think we all have seen (at least) one film of Hayao Miyazaki or Studio Ghibli. And I think we all have cried a tiny little bit (or a looot) watching a film of him. And I think we all have favorited (at least) one film in our top 5 list. So it's inevitable that there are a lot fans creating tributes to Hayao Miyazaki. And this tribute is sooo omg. Totally love it!

This short video is created by Vimeo user dono. It's a journey through films and characters of Hayao Miyazaki. It's lovely, it's magical, it's beautiful just like the films. If you don't know what the hell I'm talking about, just watch the video and start watching the films!

Does Bulbasaur really exist?

Who said that the green cute Bulbasaur (Pokémon) isn't real? Well, guess what! Some photos were put online of Bulbasaur! Yup, photos, not drawings!

Is it really Bulbasaur???!! Uhm......

Look closely and you'll see that he isn't. Sorry! This isn't Bulbasaur or one of his relatives. Photographer /u/raKnizek made this picture of a frog with just a regular acorn placed on top of it. Hmm, that's too bad. Not a real Pokémon. But /u/raKnizek said that “this little guy is one acorn away from achieving its dream of being a Pokémon!” How cute, and we will keep on dreaming that we'll see a real Pokémon one day...

Become Totoro, wear him!

Last weekend a lovely Totoro dress has been spotted. Say what? A fan convention has been held in Washington. And a visitor came in her most beautiful dress: the "Totoro-inspired Ball Gown".

How lovely. Totoro ears as a hat, a Catbus handbag and many soot sprites at the bottom of the dress. I wanna have this dress tooooo.

Famous cartoon characters become part of brand logo

Take a brand logo we all know. And take a character we all know. Blend them together into something new. There you have it, a new nice logo that almost looks like the original one.

Pop-culture artist Bruce Yan recreated some famous logos with famous characters. Do you recognize all original brands and characters?

Pokémon inspired by the style of Tim Burton

How would Pokémon look like inspired by a little bit of Tim Burton? Well, maybe like this! Yup, check out the artwork of.... no no, not Tim Burton, but Vaughn Pinpin.

The Burton X PKMN project is one of Vaughn's side projects in which he 're-imagine Pokémon but heavily inspired by the art and work of all things Tim Burton'. Click here to see more pictures or go to his tumblr.

The Simpsons channeling Studio Ghibli

In todays episode of The Simpsons, our lovely yellow friends will pay a tribute to Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. Check out the preview here at JUMI!

It looks so wonderful, I recognize a lot of Ghibli characters. Apu's Moving Castle is absolutely great. What do you think about it?

I can't wait to see this episode!

Sasagawa's sweet folding art of towels

We all know Origami. Folding paper art. But have you ever heard of Oshibori Art? This is the art of folding towels into animals, figures and celebs. Guess what, Japanese artist Isamu Sasagawa made some lovely celeb-oshibori. From Doreamon and Totoro to Pooh bear. The artist also made a lot of animals with just a simple piece of towel. So lovely!

Anyway, he also used gloves to create lovely figures, from an octopus to a banana. And it seems to be easy to create your own banana-glove. So if you have a yellow pair of gloves, check out this video. Isamu Sasagawa demonstrates how to create a banana with gloves.

Finally Kiki's Delivery Service trailer

Last time we've posted about the live-action movie Kiki's Delivery Service. It's still not one of my favorites of Studio Ghibli. But if you like it, then I've got some good news for you. Or well, good.... ahum... The trailer is out now!

To be honest I'm not really looking forward to it... after seeing the trailer (looks a bit like a B-movie to me). I don't want to nag too much about the live-action movie, because I haven't seen it yet. But as far as I've seen now, the trailer is... I'm just wondering some things. Why doesn't Kiki wear her red bow in her hair. For me that was one of the details to recognize Kiki. And the trailer shows a little boy holding a small camera (at 0:39). Huh??? Why the?? Was he filmed by accident, part of the camera crew, or is he part of the movie? Hm.

The movie has been directed by Takashi Shimizu (Ju-on: The Grudge). So I had high expectations. Too bad that the trailer dissappointed me. Hm, need to wait till March 1, 2014 (release date in Japan) to see the movie. Maybe it's not so bad. But I'm still not looking forward to it.. waiting for a Totoro movieeeee!

Meet meat Megaman

Go to the meat department at your grocery store, and mostly, the meat has been displayed... uhmm... dull. You just see packages of (sometimes bloody) red pieces of body and that's it. Wouldn't it be nice if grocery stores displayed their meat more interesting?

Well, a grocery store in Seattle, Uwajimaya, has a special way to display meat. Yup, here the ground meat has been sculptured into anime and video game characters. How cool is that! Meat Megaman! Meat Pikachu! Meat Bulbasaur! And meat Sonic the Hedgehog!!! So do you want (to eat) meat/meet Sonic (or another character)?

Wait for your bus with Totoro

Aaarghh, don't you hate it, when you have to wait for a long loooong time for the next stupid bus to come (because the previous one left too early, according to the busschedule)? Well, I do. Unless I wait for the bus at bus stop in Saikai City in Nagasaki.

Yup, at this bus stop you'll be accompanied by a friendly passenger: My Neighbor Totoro! Sweeeet!

So don't be afraid to wait alone. Don't get annoyed, angry or irritated, because you'll automatically smile when you see the passenger standing next to you. Talk to him, scream at him, hug him. Before you know it, time's up and the bus arrives :)

Jumi on tour: Japanese film festival 2013 - part 2

It's like we're seeing fewer movies each year at Camera Japan Festival. This time we were irritated, annoyed by the filmschedule and not to forget, hungry. Movies were shown at crappy times. It was impossible for us to take a day off at work, so we couldn't see some interesting movies. Anyway, this year we've seen two movies: Aura - Koga Maryuin's Last War and Outrage Beyond.

Aura
A romantic comedy about a boy, Ichiro, who got bullied at his school because he has a rich imagination of being a hero in a fantasy world. Ichiro transfers to another school. Acting more normal, because he doesn't want to be bullied again. Then Ichiro meets a strange girl. A girl who also has a rich imagination. Now she gets bullied. Ichiro has to protect her from being bullied. Read more...

This anime wasn't my cup of tea. I didn't like the ending of it. At the end it was kind of a 'realistic' story, with some sort of moral. It's an OK anime for younger people, but to me (nope I'm not old) it was not worthy enough to see this one at the festival.

Outrage Beyond
I was sooo excited to see the sequel of Yakuza movie Outrage: Outrage Beyond. But this second and last movie I've seen at the festival was a bit of a disappointment. The movie wasn't bad or whatever, but I missed the real violent sparkle of the first Outrage. Yes, you really have to see the first one. To me, the movie starts off slow. And there wasn't really an unforgettable scene in Outrage Beyond, just like the dentist scene of Outrage part one. But I still love the charismatic Kitano Takeshi.

After saying this, I must say that Outrage Beyond is my favorite I've seen at Camera Japan 2013.

Studio Ghibli goes Art Nouveau

Many artists are trying to recreate a nice piece of Studio Ghibli artwork. Most of them fail. Now Pixiv user marlboro created Art Nouveau versions of the movies. Hmmm, to be honest, I don't like them all, except the one with Totoro. That one is OK right? But it definitely looks better than this piece of artwork. What do you think? Do you like these Art Nouveau posters?

Serious fanart of Studio Ghibli classics

Don't we looove watching Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro and other Studio Ghibli classics? The cuteness, sweetness and beauty of the animated characters... Totally love it! I'm not the only one, because now some fans have recreated some of the classics into more 'serious' artwork, pictures I mean.

Cute 3D Totoro Latte Art by Kohei Matsuno

Even though I'm not a big fan of coffee, I'm already a big fan of cafe latte artist Kohei Matsuno. He created 3D latte art of My Neighbour Totoro!

That's not all. The artist, using the alias Mattsun, also created other 3D latte artworks. From traditional Japanese landscapes to realistic portraits, and of course some popular manga characters. Mattsun uses a lot milk foam and pours it into the cup and in five minutes he shapes the foam into these beautiful creations. Just by using a spoon and a sharp toothpick. Nice!

Ghibli characters in Hayao Miyazaki portrait

Click on the picture to see larger version

Various studio Ghibli characters in one picture. Wouldn't that look weird or messy? How about adding the godfather of Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki, into the picture. Hmmm. I guess I'm not the only one who wondered how that would look like.

An artist made a nice portrait of Hayao Miyazaki, filled with Ghibli characters! Yup, all in one. Setsuko (poor little girl of Grave of the Fireflies), Princess Mononoke, Catbus, No Face... they're all part of it. Hmm and one of my favorite characters tooooo (under Miyazaki's right eye, left side for us, hihi)! Love it!

Kiki's Delivery Service becomes live-action movie

Last time we've posted about the theater version of Princess Mononoke. Well, it seems like it doesn't end here. Yup, another creation of Studio Ghibli will become a live-action version. This time it's a movie version of Kiki's Delivery Service (1989).

To be honest, it's not one of my favorite Ghibli stories. Hmmm... I'm waiting for my Neighbour Totoro....

Good news is that the project will be helmed by director Takashi Shimizu. Yup, the guy from the superscary -OMG-I-still-have-nightmares- Ju-on / The Grudge movies. Hmmm, I hope he doesn't change Kiki into a scary witch, ieeekkkk! No, he said 'he wants to give his version of the teenage witch a bit of a wild side'. Good.

Anyway, we can expect the premiere in 2014. So be patient people. For now, enjoy the trailer of the animation of Kiki's Delivery Service.
